The European Commission has confirmed that tougher CO2 emissions standards for new cars will come into force in 2025, despite criticism from some in the automotive sector. Manufacturers will have to limit the average emissions of their fleet to 93.6 g/km under penalty of heavy fines.
Wopke Hoekstra, European Commissioner for Climate, said these rules will remain unchanged until 2026, saying that “changing the rules would distort the rules of the game.” Some manufacturers, such as BMW, say they are ready to meet these requirements, while others, supported by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), are calling for adjustments to avoid sanctions that could affect their investments in the electromobility.
