Installed in Marlenheim since 1is January 1990, the Obrecht couple quickly made a reputation in the field of vegetable and flower replants. To make itself known, the Marlenheim and Wasselonne markets were its first target.
The couple’s operation went well and they quickly modernized existing greenhouses and built new ones, reaching 3,000 m2. “From the beginning, our job was to do everything ourselves, from sowing to sale. Our best reference was customer loyalty, some coming from very far away,” says Michel Obrecht.
No crisis in 35 years
The man had something to look after, the fourth in a generation of market gardeners whose great-grandparents were based in Bischoffsheim.
During these 35 years of existence, the small business has not experienced a crisis. Even though two years after its beginnings, a terrible hail storm caused considerable damage to the greenhouses.
However, Michel Obrecht, who has trained around thirty apprentices, considers that the profession has its complexities. “In our job, you don’t have to count the hours. Vacations at our house were taboo. »
He had already been able to retire for two years. The climatic hazards, the administrative burdens, the increase in energy which made things more complex, weighed in the decision to finally draw the curtain.
Michel and Josiane will be able to enjoy a little and travel, he looking forward to opening up to his passion: motorcycles and vintage sports cars.
The horticultural operation is not for sale. Michel Obrecht is open to all discussions for a possible rental.
A Hartmann farm stand will now sell fruit and vegetables at the Marlenheim market on Saturday mornings, with the help of Josiane Obrecht.
