Motorists, particularly those overseas, are urged to check the brand of airbags in their car and have them replaced if necessary. A new recall was launched at the start of the year.

The Takata brand is at the heart of a consumer recall from the Ministry of Transport. In particular, he calls on overseas residents to check the name of the airbag supplier and to make a change, supported by the manufacturers.

Half a million French vehicles are affected by dangerous airbags from the Japanese brand Takata. The Ministry of Transport has reported a consumer recall for these airbags responsible for fatal accidents in the country.

Around twenty manufacturers are affected, such as Citroën, BMW, Seat, Mazda and Mercedes. Of the 15 accidents caused in in 2024, 14 occurred overseas. The reason? Their danger is accentuated by humid and hot climates, as in the islands.

How to do it?

The campaign concerns vehicles built between 1998 and 2019. You must have your vehicle identification number (VIN) of 17 characters found on the registration certificate and the registration document.

-

On the official website provided for this purpose and available HERE, you can enter the VIN number and find the brand of the vehicle. If it is affected by this consumption recall, “it is essential to intervene,” warns the Ministry of Transport. You must contact a mechanic or dealership who will change the airbags free of charge.

This procedure is not obligatory but the campaign recalls “the risk” taken in the event of non-replacement. Some defective airbags had caused fatal accidents.
