From Migros to Nestlé via PrimeEnergy Cleantech or Vetropack, Le Temps looks back for two weeks on the Swiss companies that marked 2024, companies whose difficulties reflect current economic issues and challenges.
Stahl Gerlafingen. This year, French-speaking people discovered these two words which designate a steelworker based south of Solothurn. An essential piece, two centuries old, in the Swiss construction puzzle. Capable of delivering reinforcing steel that is greener than average and “made in Switzerland” with the flexibility praised by many general contractors. Short circuit thanks to recycling.
The heavyweight has caused ink to flow because it was not spared by the steel crisis, which became acute in 2024. A global crisis, started in China where overcapacity is wreaking havoc, which is affecting Europe . Germany, France but also Switzerland where energy prices have become very high. A key parameter in an industry where furnaces must reach 1600 degrees. Stahl Gerlafingen, like Swiss Steel – the other large national steelworks – paid the price this year: the group cut its workforce and closed one of its production lines.
