Sanija Ameti, the Zurich Liberal Party who shot a picture of Jesus and Mary with a pistol, made her return to politics by participating in the parliamentary session of the Zurich City Council. In a brief statement, she thanked her colleagues for their support.
“It’s been a hectic few months, I’ve cried a lot,” Sanija Ameti told the council through tears. However, she did not cry “because of all this hatred”, but because of “the love that her colleagues on the council showed her”.
She also noted in passing, not without humor, that no member of the municipal council considered it necessary to wear a protective vest, “despite the fact that I was treated as a trigger-happy Muslim”.
Through the little door
The 32-year-old entered the Parliament building through a back door to avoid the media crowd.
On Tuesday, we learned that the Zurich Public Prosecutor’s Office had opened proceedings against the co-president of the Operation Libero movement for suspicion of an attack on freedom of belief and worship, in connection with the photo she had published on social networks where she was staged shooting at a painting representing the Virgin Mary and Jesus.
Part of the Green Liberals distanced themselves from the young politician, with party leader Jürg Grossen going so far as to demand her exclusion from the party. Sanija Ameti also lost her job at a public relations agency over the case.
