That’s it, the RER NG is arriving! After months of preparation & work, he began his first missions on Monday December 16. Discover the steps taken until it was put into operation, its first journeys and the prospects for its deployment.
It’s a historic day for the RER D: this Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the RER NG is officially inaugurated.
More comfortable, accessible to all travelers, including people with reduced mobility, this new generation train is also specially designed to offer increased carrying capacity and make it easier for travelers to get on and off. A real train for Mass Transit!
For the deployment of this new train – which also made its debut last year on line E – Île-de-France Mobilités invested 3.75 billion euros and led this project with SNCF Réseau, the manufacturer Alstom as well as Transilien SNCF Voyageurs which operates RER line D.
Major works and strong mobilization to prepare for the arrival of the RER NG
This commissioning of the RER NG is the result of a long tapproval work and integration tests – allowing compatibility between the train and the line infrastructure to be checked – by teams from Alstom and the SNCF group, under the supervision of Île-de-France Mobilités.
For 20 months, between April 2023 and November 2024, the RER NG tests on the RER D mobilized more than 200 agents from the SNCF group over nearly 12,000 kilometers traveled and around 1,500 station stops.
ℹ️ To find out more about these tests, I recommend that you read our previous articles on the RER NG. In June 2023, for example, I told you about the progress of my test day on board the RER NG.
In parallel with these tests, extensive work was carried out to adapt the network and infrastructure to this new train. In all, these are 60 months of work which were carried out: both by the network manager SNCF Réseau as well as by the station manager SNCF Gares & Connexions. These projects have notably enabled the raising of certain platforms, the strengthening of electrical power and the adaptation of signaling to adapt to the rolling stock.
Discover the 1eras missions assured in RER NG
Here are the timetables for the first missions which will be carried out by RER NG. These are theoretical timetables which can be adapted in the event of operational hazards.
Furthermore, work carried out during the day between Paris Gare de Lyon and Villeneuve Saint-Georges may modify the service of certain trains between these 2 stations. This is why I added asterisks * next to the stations concerned.
Before boarding on the RER D, I therefore invite you to check traffic conditions on our digital tools: the Île-de-France Mobilités app, the Transilien.com website, SNCF Connect or your mobility app. Trains traveling in the north > south direction

What deployment?
You will have understood, the first RER NG trains will first be operated between Creil and Corbeil Essonnes via Évry Courcouronnes during off-peak hours Monday to Friday.
This operational period will allow line D – in conjunction with the manufacturer Alstom – to test the reliability of the equipment in real operational conditions. Experience shows that a break-in period of approximately one year in commercial operation is necessary for any new train. Depending on the reliability of these new trains and deliveries by the manufacturer Alstom, the RER NG will gradually be injected during peak hours then, later, on the Melun branch via Combs la Ville.
This deployment of the RER NG in stages will allowequip 100% of line D by 2029. I will be sure to come back to you later to inform you of the different stages of the deployment.
Until then, we will have the opportunity to come back to the specificities of this new equipment, how the first travelers discovered it and how the RER D agents also adapted to this new train. Share your questions and comments with us!
