Condominium property owners will be gnashing their teeth. The mandatory upgrade of elevator alarm systems, which will begin in 2025, is expected to cost them a small fortune. With no less than 630,000 elevators affected in this technological upgrade will impact the portfolio of millions of co-owners.

The ax will therefore fall in 2025 with the planned shutdown of the 2G network by , followed by SFR and Bouygues Telecom in 2026. 3G will follow the same path between 2028 and 2029. This technological development forces co-owners to modernize their remote alarm systems elevators, the famous yellow buttons which allow you to call for help in the event of a breakdown.

Up to 2,300 euros to pay

The bill promises to be particularly steep: the intervention to install the new system will cost between 800 and 1,500 euros depending on the complexity of the installation. But that's not all: the annual subscription will also skyrocket, going from 400 euros on average to 800 euros per year. A dizzying increase which will directly impact co-ownership charges.

Industry professionals advise not to wait until the last minute to make this upgrade. They even recommend anticipating so as not to be surprised. In fact, when teams work on an elevator not equipped with 4G, they automatically install the new system.

Aware of the scale of the project, the Elevator Federation tried to obtain additional time from the telephone operators, in vain. No less than 232,000 2G communicating systems will need to be updated by the end of 2026, and 58,000 3G systems by 2028-2029. A real technological marathon is coming.

Another bill

This new expense is part of an already tense context for the co-owners. Between the rise in energy prices, the increase in environmental charges and the increase in the salaries of maintenance staff, the budgets of co-owners are already under strain.

For certain co-ownerships, the transition to 4G could nevertheless have a positive note: savings are possible on the operator subscription. A small consolation given the scale of the necessary investments.

  • The end of 2G/3G networks forces the modernization of elevator remote alarms by 2025-2029
  • The installation will cost between 800 and 1500 euros per elevator, plus a doubling of the annual subscription
  • Of the 630,000 elevators in France, almost half will need to be brought up to standard quickly
