Air Canada announced Wednesday changes to baggage allowances and seat changes in some more economical fare categories starting in January.
The changes affect tickets at basic fares and economy class comfort.
These changes align the Company’s fare structure with similar fare offerings from other Canadian air carriers and make it easier to distinguish between its fare brands.
explains Air Canada in a press release.
Less carry-on baggage
So, starting January 3, base fare travelers to North America and sun destinations will have to check in rolling suitcases, sports bags and large backpacks, for a fee.
These will range from $35 to $65, depending on whether it is a first bag, a second bag or a bag checked at the last minute when boarding.

Federal Transport Minister Anita Anand reacted on X to the new fees that will be imposed on baggage that could previously be brought into the cabin free of charge. It’s worrying. Canadians work hard and save to travel. They deserve good service, not extra fees.
Even more abusive fees for Canadian passengers in 2025
deplores for its part the group defending travelers’ rights Air Passenger Rightsfounded by Gabor Lukacs.
Items still exempt
Exemptions will apply to members of certain loyalty clubs and holders of certain credit cards.
Small personal items, such as purses and computer bags, will still be allowed on board. Strollers, mobility aids and medical equipment will also continue to be accepted at no additional cost.
The airline will, however, allow customers who opt for the (more expensive) comfort fare to check two suitcases free of charge.
Fees for seat changes
Furthermore, from January 21, consumers who have opted for the basic fare and who have not paid the supplement for seat preselection will have to pay if they want to change the seat that was automatically assigned to them.
