Good news for your electricity bill in 2025

This is good news for consumers: after an initial announcement in favor of a price increase, Prime Minister Michel Barnier revealed during an interview with Le Figaro that he had “decided not to increase taxes on electricity in the 2025 finance bill“. If the news is intended to be rather good for French households, it nevertheless remains to be qualified. In reality, the level of TICFE will increase, but not beyond what was already planned in the law. The Prime Minister has therefore not decided to cancel the planned increase, but simply not to go beyond this increase.

It will therefore be necessary to pay 0,032€/kWh instead of 0.021€/kWh next year. A moderate increase, which will ultimately not reach the 0.042€/kWh mentioned. For French people subject to the regulated sales tariff for electricity, this should lead to a reduction in the final bill, for a net gain of 14% from next February. A decision taken after weeks of heated debates with the opposition, which demanded alignment on falling electricity prices.

Concretely, what is changing?

Your subscription will not change as such. On the other hand, it is the “consumption” line, and more particularly the “KWh price excluding tax”, which will decrease. The next line, “Transport tariff contribution“, will remain the same, while that dedicated to “Contribution to the public electricity service“, will increase, going from 0.021€/kWh to 0.032€/kWh. Ultimately, the total amount claimed by your electricity supplier will decrease by a few euros.

How do you know if you are affected?

Please note, this overall drop will not affect everyone. To find out if you are eligible for this new pricing, you must inspect your last invoice and look for the words “market price“, written next to your contract number. It is under this unique condition that you will be able to benefit from a 14% reduction on your bill from next February. This concerns in particular EDF’s “Tarif Bleu” contracts.

In total, 20 million French people will be winners. What relieve (a little) financial pressure which weighs on households, already subject to the full force of the various changes which will punctuate the month of December and the end of 2024.
