This is the end of a little helping hand that was well appreciated by employees. This week, URSSAF announced a major change in the electric car market. From 2025, employees will no longer be able to recharge their vehicle freely and free of charge at their workplace. Until now tolerated, the practice offered by certain companies will now be considered as a benefit in kind, and therefore subject to tax regulations. Enough to change the situation, not only for employees, but also for employees.
You will have to pay
Until now, this measure implemented in 2020 was intended to be an incentive, since it offered certain employees the possibility of recharging their electric car for free directly at their workplace. A solution that is not only very profitable on a financial level – according to figures from Avere France published at the end of 2023, users spend on average 10 to 20€ per month recharge electric to power their vehicle — but which also had the advantage of not being subject to any taxation. The benefit was therefore accessible free of charge, without any impact on the employee's pay slip.
A logical decision, in an emerging market context, where the objective was to convince the French to opt for electric mobility, before the latter definitively replaces thermal models in Europe. The objective was then twofold: encourage employees to drive greenerand businesses to install charging stations in their parking lots.
Here's what will change
From January 1, companies that offer charging stations to their employees will have to cover additional costsparticularly linked to social contributions on electricity. This benefit must also be included in employees' tax returns, and may be subject to additional payment. Tax fairness, believes the URSSAF, which intends to allow all employees to benefit from uniform treatment, regardless of their situation.
Note, however, that the decision is still subject to final validation. The possibility of recharging your vehicle for free at the office was supposed to end on December 31, 2022, it was finally extended until the end of 2024 by decree. It is therefore not completely excluded that a similar decision be taken before the end of the yearand that tolerance continues for a few more months, like restaurant vouchers, which should theoretically be limited in supermarkets by next year.
