Quebec will pay $350,000 to help the Le 55 shelter find new premises in Lévis, but the resource will not move immediately.
Le 55, which welcomes people experiencing homelessness, obtained the necessary funding for its move.
The Ministry of Health has notably authorized an amount of $250,000 to allow the organization to move, but the location has not yet been confirmed.
“The funding is coming at just the right time. This is excellent news. We are not far from a solution. We must meet on December 2 to take stock and see to completing this relocation,” explained Mayor Gilles Lehouillier.
According to him, the customer base has exploded over the past year. “We found ourselves with a somewhat cramped premises. We must take charge of this matter. We are in proactive mode.”
Mr. Lehouillier now assures that a new location will be announced soon.
A few months ago, The Journal had reported on the housing crisis which is also wreaking havoc on the South Shore. Organizations helping homeless people are overwhelmed.
The number of people experiencing homelessness is also increasing sharply on the other side of the river and reception capacity is quickly being exceeded.
Open since fall 2022, Le 55, in the Côte du Passage, attracts “more and more” people who are homeless or who have precarious residential stability.
In recent months, small individual and temporary camps have also started to appear on Lévis territory.
“We see that our meetings will bear fruit. On December 2, I am crossing my fingers to decide on the new location,” concluded Mr. Lehouillier.
