Who has the cheapest baguette?

Among Leclerc, Lidl or Aldi, discover the 2 supermarkets where the baguette is the cheapest in 2024. It only costs 0.39 euros!

32 million French people eat a baguette every day. So the question is, which are the 2 supermarkets where this bread is the cheapest in 2024? LidlLeclerc, Intermarché? Here is the place where it only costs 0.39 euros!

Baguette: a symbol of French identity

In November 2022, the baguette was recognized as a key component of French culture. It also competed with the Belgian fries, another symbolic food of the country.

The baguette can be eaten at any time of the day. In the early morning as a toast. Then at lunchtime as a sandwich, as a snack or at dinner with soup. It is a flagship product, which was made from 4 simple ingredients.

Either flour, water, salt, yeast or sourdough. We are lucky to have bakers who make it to perfection. They create several models, such as “well cooked” or “not too cooked”.

There is also the white one, nicely browned or very crispy. So you have understood, this is a pure French tradition that makes us proud. No matter the cooking methods, this bread pleases everyone.

Even other countries envy us! So big brands like LidlIntermarché and Leclerc produce a lot of them, to satisfy their customers. It is an ideal solution for households who want to save money.

Because it costs much less. In fact, the price is more attractive at Lidl and other brands. So the question arises, where should you buy your baguette at a low price in 2024?

Should we go to LidlLeclerc, or even Intermarché? To find out, Que Choisir conducted its survey on several models. Such as classic, traditional and organic. The study was conducted on 1000 bakeries and 500 supermarkets.

Lidl, Leclerc, Intermarché, baguette: which is the cheapest?

Despite inflation, the price of a baguette has not exploded in 2022 and 2023. This is a relief for households. And to date, a classic baguette costs €1.07 on average in bakeries. That is 1 cent more than a year ago. A very reasonable difference.

Be aware that in supermarkets, its price has dropped. In fact, it is sold at €0.60 on average, compared to €0.65 at the same time last year. According to the magazine, three stores offer a baguette at a low price.

There is Lidl and Aldi with the cheapest classic baguette which is only €0.39. Then there is Leclerc which is just behind with an average price of €0.43. Our colleagues at Que Choisir have said more.

“The price difference between supermarkets and bakeries remains very significant. This is despite our analyses carried out 2 years ago on 75 samples of bread.

“And 25 baguettes showed that the nutritional balance and quality of ingredients were not necessarily better in independent bakeries than in large-scale distribution.”

For the traditional baguette, it costs around €1.24 in a bakery. This additional cost of 17 cents compared to the classic baguette will guarantee you in particular the absence of freezing and any additives“, the magazine explains.

And what about organic baguettes? They cost €1.27 in supermarkets. So this is still a reasonable price because organic products limit the use of additives. This guarantees the use of wheat that is more environmentally friendly.

So come on in Lidl, Leclerc, Intermarché, the most modest households are therefore spoiled for choice.
