The acquisition of 60 hypermarkets and 115 supermarkets allows the group to consolidate its position as a challenger in France.

« This is a major operation for Carrefour, the most important in France since the purchase of Promodès, more than twenty years ago. “, assures Alexandre Bompard, the CEO of the distributor. On Monday, the group received the green light from the Competition Authority to integrate 60 Cora hypermarkets and 115 Match supermarkets, one year after the announcement of their acquisition from the Belgian distributor Louis Delhaize, for 1.05 billion euros. Carrefour can thus begin the integration of these large stores, even if the competition watchdog, which granted it an exemption to initiate this integration, must still rule on the substance during the first quarter of 2025.

The second largest French food retailer is hoping to take advantage of the consolidation of the sector to strengthen its positions. The setbacks of the Casino group, forced to sell most of its hypermarkets and supermarkets to Auchan, Intermarché and, to a lesser extent, Carrefour, are reshuffling the cards in this highly competitive sector.
