What role for open source in the software-defined enterprise sector?

Sponsored by LF Energy, the report analyzes how vertical industries have become increasingly software-defined thanks to open source technologies. The goal: to show how industries still in the early stages of digital transformation can benefit from open source.

Industries examined in the report, released last week, include agriculture, automotive, energy, entertainment, financial services, media and telecommunications.

The report explains how the cited sectors are moving forward with open source as an accelerator of their digital transformation plans, how they are integrating collaboration into their R&D and development models, and relying heavily on open source technologies to remain competitive. The study also highlights the benefits of a collaborative development model, including improved interoperability and accelerated developments.

The report’s role is to be both educational and incentivising. To this end, it provides some examples of successful digital transformations, notably thanks to open source standards. Alex Thornton, Executive Director of LF Energy, takes the energy sector as an example, which has made progress in terms of digitalisation:

« The energy transition requires that we digitally optimize our physical infrastructure, and open source is the best way to build this digital layer quickly, securely, and cost-effectively. ».
