“Our government cannot set prices at the checkout, but we can put more money in people’s pockets,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a press conference in a Toronto grocery store on Thursday.
This “Rebate for Canadian Workers” will benefit “those who have worked hard to beat inflation,” maintains the government.
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland urged people who have not yet completed their 2023 tax return to do so before December 31 if they wish to receive this check.
The $250 check in early spring could coincide with the federal election being called. Many observers believe the election could take place in the spring, although the deadline for the Liberals’ current mandate ends in the fall.
Justin Trudeau’s Liberals added to this measure an exemption from the GST on a host of consumer products, the list of which is available on our site.
These two measures taken together could cost public funds more than $6 billion, according to an estimate from the Wall Street Journal.
