DECRYPTION – The Strasbourg court must examine this Friday the takeover offers submitted to save four sites of the French steelmaker.

For some 800 employees of the steel group Ascometal, it is a difficult suspense to live through. This Friday, the Strasbourg court will rule on the future of the steelmaker’s four sites. Placed in receivership in March and put back up for sale by its owner Swiss Steel, Ascometal has attracted the interest of several candidates. At the end of April, five potential buyers had come forward to take over one or more of the group’s five industrial sites (Hagondange, Le Marais, Les Dunes, Custines and Fos-sur-Mer). The combination of these partial takeover offers should have saved almost all of the steelmaker’s employees. However, if the Fos-sur-Mer site was taken over as hoped by the Marcegaglia group, the future of the other plants is more than uncertain.

Between the hearing on April 26 and the deadline for submitting offers set for June 12, almost all potential buyers threw in the towel. The Italian group Venete, which was considering taking over the Hagondange sites…
