Airbus will deliver fewer planes and the stock market is falling, should Toulouse employees be worried?

This Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Airbus fell 9.41% on the Paris Stock Exchange. This is its worst fall on the stock market since 2022, which erases its gains made since the start of the year, and this follows the announcement from the Toulouse aircraft manufacturer. Airbus has in fact reported difficulties for its aircraft deliveries and its space division which forced it to lower its financial outlook for 2024. This announcement also brought down engine manufacturer Safran, which lost more than 4%.

770 planes instead of 800

The European aircraft manufacturer indicated Monday evening that it would not not able to respect the roadmap set at the start of the year: it plans to deliver only 770 planes compared to 800 previously announced, due to persistent difficulties in its supplier chain.

He also announced a new provision of 900 million euros in the first half, linked to “certain space telecommunications, navigation and observation programs”.

Shared unions

So should we be worried? We reached two union representatives from Airbus by telephone. “The immediate impact will not be seen, but all this has an impact on turnover and perhaps on our ability to remain a leader on commercial aircraft”tells us Guillaume Bonnet, deputy central union representative for airbus aircraft CFE CGC in Blagnac.

Bertrand Mendez, central FO delegate, at Airbus aircraft (sales and production part) is more reassuring to him. He reminds us that in 2023, Airbus delivered 735 aircraft: “Airbus’ health is good, its full order book for 11 years production. This announcement will bring more serenity internally because the difficulties are on the supply chain side. So by revising the delivery targets downwards, Airbus is giving our suppliers some breathing space.”

According to the unionist, this reduction in sail will make it possible to better train the hundreds of people recruited last year (3,500 in total in France).
