(Agence Ecofin) – Orange (then France Télécom) entered the capital of Mauritius Telecom in 2000. In 2007, MT adopted the “Orange” brand as part of a 10-year agreement to replace the “Cellplus” brand “. It was replaced by “MyT” in 2017.

The telecommunications company Orange SA plans to sell the 40% stake it holds in Mauritius Telecom, the historic operator of Mauritius. The decision would be motivated by the fact that this asset is no longer considered strategic for the French multinational. The information was reported by Bloomberg in an article on Friday June 21 citing anonymous sources close to the matter.

No decision has yet been taken and Orange could decide to keep its assets in Mauritius Telecom (MT) for longer, we learn. For now, the company has discussed its potential exit plan with advisors, but has yet to formally speak with the incumbent’s board of directors. A decision could be made in November.

According to sources, Orange’s stake in Mauritius Telecom has become less strategic for the French company since its brand was abandoned in 2017 to the detriment of the “MyT” brand. The “Orange” brand was adopted in 2007, seven years after Orange (then France Telecom) acquired a stake in the historic operator for around $261 billion.

As a reminder, Mauritius Telecom claimed 1.05 million customers at the end of 2022 in a market where it competes with Emtel and MTML (Chile). According to the latest statistics from the Information and Communications Technology Authority (ICTA), Mauritius had 2.1 million mobile service subscribers in 2023.
