The story of Swiss Re began with a fire. A giant fire reduced two thirds of the town of Glarus to ashes in 1861 and caused considerable damage. Helvetia, the Basel Commercial Bank and Credit Suisse decided to join forces two years after the disaster, thus marking the birth of the reinsurer.

The Zurich multinational is today the world number two in the sector behind the German Munich Re. The group is coming off a good year in 2023. Its net profit soared to 3.2 billion dollars (2.8 billion francs) compared to a result of 472 million in 2022. On the income side, net premiums collected and commissions rose to 45 billion dollars, up 4.4%.
