The German technology group Rheinmetall, based in Düsseldorf, has received a record order of $9 billion for munitions from the German armed forces, the arms giant announced on Friday.

By way of a press release, the German group indicated that it had received a framework contract from the Bundeswehr (German armed forces) for the delivery of 155 mm artillery ammunition with a gross value of up to 8.5 billion euros. ($9.09 billion).

The contract was signed on Thursday by Annette Lehnigk-Emden, Director of the Federal Office of Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), and representatives of Rheinmetall in Koblenz at the office headquarters.

“The main objective of this order is to replenish the stocks held by the Bundeswehr and its allies, as well as to support Ukraine in its defense campaign,” the statement read.

The main buyer will be Germany, which will supply part of the equipment to Ukraine, but partners, such as the Netherlands, Estonia and Denmark, are also participating in the order, according to the group.

Rheinmetall added that deliveries are expected to begin as early as early 2025.

Armin Papperger, Chairman of the Board of Management of Rheinmetall AG, welcomed this order, the largest in the company’s history, and said: “This large-scale framework contract underlines Rheinmetall’s leading role as a as an ammunition supplier in Germany and our position as the world’s largest manufacturer of artillery ammunition.

Papperger added that Rheinmetall will produce the entire artillery ammunition value chain in Unterluess, Lower Saxony, in order to be able to offer the entire ammunition from a single source, the projectile, fuse, explosive charge and propellant charge. which propels the projectile from the cannon when fired.
