Automobile repair: the great French disparity

In 2024, according to a study by Idgarages, the cost of automobile repairs continues to rise, although more moderately than in 2023. Behind this increase, marked disparities between regions reveal a two-speed in terms of automobile maintenance.

Automotive repair: a slowing price rise

After a meteoric increase of 11.51% between 2022 and 2023, the evolution of automobile repair prices in 2024 has stabilized, recording an average increase of 7.64%. This trend is partly explained by an effort by mechanics to control their costs and remain competitive. However, the average cost of an intervention remains high: around 369 euros per service.

The main driver of this increase is the inflation of spare parts, particularly for critical elements such as brakes (+20.63%) or shock absorbers. On the other hand, labor rates saw a more moderate increase of 4.88%, reflecting an attempt by professionals to contain costs in a post-inflation context.

Certain services are experiencing gentler developments. For example, the cost of air conditioning overhaul increased by only 5.75%. This trend shows that packages combining parts and labor experience less marked price variations, unlike interventions involving more expensive parts.

Striking regional disparities

In France, repair costs vary greatly depending on the region. In 2024, will emerge as the cheapest region, succeeding Burgundy-Franche-Comté in 2023. In contrast, Île-de-France remains the most expensive, with in the lead. In the latter, costs exceed the regional average by 10%, while Seine-Saint-Denis is 8% below.

These differences can be explained by various factors. In Île-de-France, the high price of living and the margins charged by garages contribute to price inflation. Conversely, regions like Occitanie benefit from less expensive labor and lower ancillary costs. Routine services, such as general overhaul, cost on average 332.87 euros, but can vary between 319.13 euros in and 351.24 euros in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.

Faced with these disparities, consumers must be extra vigilant. Comparing quotes and looking for transparent platforms are essential to avoid unpleasant surprises and control your budget.
