Toronto is the city with the highest cost of living in Canada, for a third consecutive year, and in the top 100 cities in the world, according to Mercer’s annual ranking, released Monday.

Among the 226 cities analyzed around the world, the Queen City was ranked 92nd in the world, and fell two places compared to last year.

Vancouver is the second most expensive city (101st place), followed by Montreal which is the third most expensive Canadian city for international employees (it went from 135th place in 2023 to 118th place in 2024).

Ottawa also saw the cost of living increase, going from 137th place to 126th place, while Calgary remained stable (141st place).

The survey nevertheless notes that Canadian cities remain the most affordable in North America. “The job market remains more stable than elsewhere in the world and the Canadian economy, compared to those of other countries, is still performing well,” he said.

The most expensive city in North America is New York in the United States (7th place in the world), followed in particular by Los Angeles (10th), Honolulu (12th), San Francisco (13th), Miami (17th), Boston (19th) and Chicago (20th), to name just a few.
