In Stockholm, we will soon be able to travel by flying and electric boats

Ewhat if, to go to work, we replaced our classic trips by metro, bus or car with a short trip on an ecological and – almost – flying boat? This is the objective of Candela, a Swedish start-up which is developing 100% electric foiling boats, or “water wings”, capable of making the craft hover above the surface of the water. Candela promises to decarbonize mobility with a solution that is faster, less polluting and consumes 90% less energy than conventional public transport ships.

Founded in 2014, the young company initially focused on building electric pleasure boats, the latest version of which broke a world record by covering 420 nautical miles – the equivalent of 777 kilometers – in 24 hours in the Stockholm archipelago.

Save up to 90% energy

Then the start-up realized the scale of the market and the potential of its technology applied to public transport. “Until today, transporting people by water is dirty and expensive, it has never evolved much,” notes Gustav Hasselskog, co-founder of the start-up. A small boat consumes fifteen times more fuel than a medium-sized car…” Hence the choice of electric energy.

But this is not enough since “if we want to electrify a boat, we must have enormous quantities of energy which the batteries do not have. Building an electric boat is therefore a very bad idea […] Read more
