Security publisher McAfee Labs has compiled a list of ten international destinations to be wary of when booking a vacation online. Here’s why you need to be very careful!

As summer approaches, you are probably planning your vacation, and maybe you even want to go abroad! To do this, it’s a safe bet that you will use reservation sites on the Internet. And that’s wherethere may be pitfalls to avoid.

Because according to McAfee Labs, not all destinations are in the same boat when it comes to cybersecurity when it comes to booking online. According to the report published by the security publisher, 31% of people surveyed in France have already been victims of an online scam associated with a travel reservation. And among these same people, 22% would have lost 1000 euros or more in this scam.

What are the most common scams?

McAfee Labs identifies three types of scams that are unfortunately on the rise online: fake sites that collect the Internet user’s banking informationwhich leads to fraudulent payments, un click on a malicious confirmation linkAnd fake photos of the vacation destinationwhich push you to make a reservation for accommodation that does not exist.

Then come the scams when travelers arrive there, often abroad: the hotel reservation which does not exist despite the deposit paidthe excursion or entertainment paid in advance, but for which the service provider does not show upor the excursion also paid in advancebut which does not correspond at all to what was announced.

So many scams which can therefore seriously spoil a vacationespecially when you have the feeling of having prepared them well.

Which countries are most affected?

Ten destinations are presented as being more at risk than the others, according to McAfee Labs. To compile its list, the publisher analyzed search results for certain keywords like “discount”, “Airbnb”, “local cuisine” and “excursions”. It turns out that you have to be careful when booking in these places:

  • Bangkok, Thailand
  • Marrakech, Morocco
  • Lisbon, Portugal
  • Porto, Portugal
  • Dubai, Arab Emirates
  • Montreal, Canada
  • Ibiza, Spain
  • Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe
  • New York, United States
  • Ajaccio, Corsica

If you decide to go to one of these places, be extra vigilant when making reservations : go through well-known platforms, look at the ratings of previous customers and beware of unsolicited messages. If you want to go through a rental site between individuals, do a reverse image search to check if the photos have already been used in other ads. And for payments, always use a platform that offers you guarantees in the event of a problem : do not accept the offer that may be made to you to go “live” to save a few euros, because it could cost you much more in the end.
