The unemployment rate and employment in Quebec recorded no variation between the months of April and May, according to Statistics Canada data released Friday.

Full-time employment fell slightly by 0.1% in La Belle Province for this fifth month of the year. The number of part-time workers has not changed at all over the same period.

Ontario managed to do somewhat well for part-time jobs, which increased by 3.5% month over month, but saw no change for full-time jobs.

Compared over one year, Quebec created more part-time jobs with a jump of 4.6% between May 2023 and May 2024 compared to an increase of 3.1% over the same period in Ontario.

However, the results are completely different when it comes to full-time work. In fact, Ontario managed to increase its number of workers by 1.6%, while Quebec faced a decline of 0.1% over one year.

Little change in Canada

The same trend was observed at the national level since only 27,000 new jobs were created between April and May 2024.

Canada’s unemployment rate increased by just 0.1 percentage points during the month and by 0.9 percentage points from a year earlier.

The number of workers particularly increased in the health care and social assistance sectors (+1.1%); finance, insurance, real estate services and rental and leasing services (+2%); business services, building services and other support services (2.7%) and accommodation and food services (1.1%).

Conversely, a decrease was noted in the fields of construction (-1.9%), transportation and warehousing (1.9%) and utilities (-3.5%).
