A week after announcing his desire to abolish the GST on the sale of new homes worth a million dollars or less, Pierre Poilievre invites the provinces to do the same for their respective taxes.

He made the request in a letter sent on Monday to the provincial premiers.

“Across the country, provincial sales taxes also significantly increase the cost of housing,” he writes.

According to the Conservative leader, abolishing the sales tax on homes worth less than $1 million will make “housing more affordable for buyers,” and “will lead to the construction of 30,000 additional homes each year.”

“I understand that all provinces are different. But if you align my announcement with the elimination of your own provincial sales tax on new housing, you will save your residents tens of thousands of dollars,” argues Pierre Poilievre.

Quebec Finance Minister Eric Girard had already indicated last week that he found this measure “costly for Quebec” and ineffective in boosting construction.

“I wouldn’t say it would make it worse [la flambée des prix en immobilier]but it will not stimulate construction,” he declared.
