A campaign will be launched over the next few days by Pedestrians Quebec in order to educate motorists to pay close attention to blind spots located behind their windshield pillars, which are responsible for certain collisions with pedestrians.
Windshield pillars were a contributing factor in 18% of pedestrian fatality collisions between 2018 and 2020, according to data from Pedestrians Quebec after an analysis of coroner’s reports.
The organization therefore wants to encourage drivers to lean forward if they want to change direction.
“It’s only since 2022 that this maneuver has been taught in driving courses, so it’s quite recent that we became aware of this,” explained the general director of Piétons Québec, Sandrine Cabana-Degani.
“The windshield pillars have always existed, they are used to support the roof of the car, but now they are bigger because we have introduced airbags inside,” she said.
More specifically, the organization suggests that motorists “act like a PRO,” that is, lean forward, look both ways and tell yourself that it’s OK to go. if there is no one.
The campaign, launched in collaboration with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ), will be broadcast from November 5 to 19.
