The “swing states”, those states which swing the presidential election in the United States, are at the heart of the campaign. But political forces have evolved significantly over time. A look back at history with our interactive infographic a few days before the vote.
A few thousand votes could decide the outcome of the US election next Tuesday. All eyes are on a handful of states, where the gap between Democrats and Republicans remains very tight.
In 2016, Republican Donald Trump took power after narrowly winning over Florida, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Four years later, the Democrats and Joe Biden regained the White House by recovering Michigan, Pennsylvania and Arizona.

Discover on our infographic how support for the two major parties has evolved since 1952.
