A dialogue must be started as quickly as possible regarding a substantial increase in electricity rates for Hydro-Québec, according to an expert.

“If Quebec wants to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions without compromising its economic growth, we will need this discussion,” said Anthony Migneault, senior economist at the Institut du Québec, on Sunday.
In a report published this week, the non-profit organization highlights that energy efficiency has become essential in the project to decarbonize Quebec.
“Energy efficiency is becoming essential” in modern times, mentions the author of the study on LCN waves.
The low price of electricity means that the population does not pay attention to its use, and this trend is not about to be changed.
Ceiling at 3%
François Legault had announced an increase in the prices of the State Company capped at 3%. It would therefore be difficult for the Prime Minister to reverse this announcement to increase prices more significantly.
This discussion must, however, begin quickly, according to Anthony Migneault.
“We must also think about the social issues that this will raise,” he adds.
Indeed, an increase in prices could be more difficult for low-income households, admits the economist.
“The goal is really to reduce electricity consumption for incidental needs,” reiterates Mr. Migneault.
