These supermarkets put chocolate bars under lock for a good reason

Some supermarkets have taken a rather surprising decision: they have put chocolate bars under anti-theft protection!

This is an unexpected decision taken by many supermarkets. Several stores have decided to put chocolate bars under lock. And it’s for a very specific reason. Here’s everything you need to know on the subject.

The cash decision of supermarkets

On a daily basis, many supermarkets have to deal with certain thefts. And the least we can say is that this represents a real deficit in their turnover. Some then implemented several solutions.

Surveillance cameras, security guards and even the use of artificial intelligence, several stores have deployed major resources to no longer suffer thefts. And some had resort to a rather surprising practice.

Indeed, some supermarkets have decided to use anti-theft devices on their chocolate bars. This is notably the decision taken by Monoprix. Normally, this is a decision made for very expensive products.

In order to deter thieves from stealing these famous products, anti-theft devices have emerged on items worth a small fortune. This is also the case on alcohol bottles, for example.

But to the greatest surprise of some consumers, Anti-theft devices also appeared on chocolate bars. And supermarkets have decided to implement this decision for a very specific reason.

“The anti-theft device costs more than the product itself”

In just one year, stores saw a 14% increase in shoplifting. The main cause? Inflation. Due to rising prices, an increase in theft has occurred among many consumers.

As a reminder, the food products increased by 16.3%. This increase has pushed many French people to resort to theft. However, there is no question for the big brands to let this happen.

Many supermarkets have decided to be extra vigilant in order to limit the number of thefts. This is particularly the case of a Monoprix in which took a more radical decision. This choice did not fail to create a buzz.

In fact, she decided to put an anti-theft device in place on the chocolate bars. And the least we can say is that this novelty has made the rounds on social networks. Several Internet users have also decided to speak out.

“The anti-theft device costs more than the product itself… Where are we at?”declared an Internet user on the social network X. But that’s not all. These locks have also been used on salmon.

“My country has become one where we put locks on fish and where we put the chocolate in anti-theft plastic boxes”also said another Internet user about this choice of supermarkets.

An inconclusive test?

In a press release, Monoprix decided to comment on this decision. The store brand revealed “that it was an isolated initiative from a store which carried out a test for a few hours”.

Before explaining that this test “was not conclusive so the locks were removed”. If this supermarket had made this decision, it is because it faces numerous thefts.

Every month, the store loses 500 euros. So, he decided to implement certain tips in order to deter thieves. On the other hand, it was a decision that clearly did not work.
