Lhe boss of Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, plans to scrap the paper boarding pass within a few months and only allow online check-in. The measure could come into force in May next year, Irish media wrote on Monday.
The Irish low-cost airline wants to reduce its costs with this measure. Ryanair counters would disappear at airports and each passenger would have to check in via their smartphone. Ultimately, Michael O’Leary wants to make it impossible to check in at the counter. “We are working to have everything done via the app by the 1st at the latest.is May”, according to his comments relayed by the Irish media.
Access to Ryanair flights would therefore become difficult for passengers who do not have a smartphone. In the event of a flat battery, the company could also use a special procedure to know where the person is sitting on the plane using their name and identity document.
Currently, around 60% of the airline’s passengers already use the app. The CEO of Ryanair estimates that this proportion will increase to 80% by the end of the year and that all passengers will switch to smartphones by next spring.
