After several weeks of procrastination, the City of Quebec will finally move forward with a new tax on registration as of January 1, 2025. The amount has for the moment been set at $10, but it could be revised by here on September 15.

This request is accompanied by a provisional amount to allow the City to meet the deadline in force.specifies a press release sent Monday afternoon, while the deadline for sending a request to the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec was set for May 31.

Mayor Bruno Marchand, in recent weeks, has repeated several times that he does not wish to impose this new tax without being able to say how this new revenue for the City will help improve the public transport offer. .

He wanted to push back the May 31 deadline, but the SAAQ had indicated that no postponement was possible. The mayor finally succeeded in obtaining a second deadline of September 15 to adjust the amount that will be collected from motorists.

I thank the minister’s openness for this request which will allow us all to act as rigorous managers and wait to have an overall picture before moving forward. The City will need this tax, but it is our duty to define it betterdeclared Bruno Marchand in the announcement press release.

Merchant tax

The mayors of Lévis, L’Ancienne-Lorette and Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures have all closed the door to the imposition of a new tax on registration to finance public transportation.

This is what makes it the Merchant tax. It’s really just in Quebec that we’re going to have this. […] We do not think that Quebec must move forward alone in this, says the leader of the opposition at city hall. Claude Villeneuve also argues that it’s sure going to be more than ten dollars when the September 15 deadline arrives.

For this to be brought to us like this, without telling us what it will finance and what the final amount will be, I find that the mayor is not taking us seriously with his tax.

A quote from Claude Villeneuve, leader of the opposition at Quebec City Hall

This new tax of 10 dollars in Quebec will be added to the 30 dollars that all Quebec motorists have paid since 1992 to finance public transport. This amount has never been indexed.
