Cozy and technological interior

At this price, the “small” Renault (3.92 m) can highlight its inimitable, deliciously retro style, which never ceases to turn heads in its path. It can also highlight standard equipment provided, including the reversing camera, automatic headlights and windshield wipers, the inductive smartphone charger, the heat pump and multimedia with integrated Google services. All on board in a cabin where technology mixes with retro touches, especially by opting for the Collection trim which combines yellow and black. The habitability is also correct for all four seats, and the 326-liter trunk is standard.

And on the road?

At this price, you also have the Comfort Range configuration, which combines a 52 kWh battery with a 150 hp motor. Enough to make the R5 very efficient, especially since its chassis with suspension firm enough to contain roll without hindering comfort is very effective. Its agility is also remarkable, thanks to its reduced turning radius in town and its precise steering outside. If Renault has equipped its R5 with several driving modes (notably ECO) to maximize autonomy, and a “B” position on the gearbox which increases energy recovery, we regret that the paddles on the steering wheel allowing modulate this regeneration have been forgotten. Just like the absence of single-pedal driving would have been a plus for a city-oriented car. But this will be one of its rare faults on the road, with perhaps aerodynamic noise too present at motorway speed.

Verdict

Expected as it was, the R5 could not disappoint. And fortunately that’s not the case. In line with the Mégane and Scenic, Renault demonstrates its ability to produce electric vehicles that are pleasant to drive and versatile. The range announced with this 52 KWh battery is 410 km. We estimated 325 during our test. Significantly more than its direct rival at Citroën. At home, charging can be done at up to 11 kW at an alternating current terminal. On the other hand, for longer journeys, the 100 kW of maximum direct current charging power is a little limited. But 26 minutes will allow you to go from 10 to 80% of maximum capacity.

Its good sides

– Its style and interior combine retro and modern touches

– Its pleasant road behavior

– Its real autonomy which makes it versatile
