German discount food brand Lidl announced Thursday that it had achieved record sales for Christmas in the United Kingdom, exceeding for the first time one billion pounds (1.21 billion euros) in the four weeks before December 24.

“Sales increased by almost 7% compared to the previous year, with Lidl stores welcoming more than 2 million additional customers,” the company said in a statement. She specifies that the busiest day was December 23.
Lidl, the country's sixth largest supermarket chain, according to data from Kantar, has seen its market share increase steadily in the country in recent years, marked by a surge in the cost of living which has penalized the purchasing power of British people. .
If inflation has fallen from the peaks of recent years, it has started to rise again in recent months in the country, to 2.6% year-on-year in November.
The record sales are “a strong reflection of the trust that our customers place in us”, assured Ryan McDonnell, general manager of the brand in the country, in the press release, highlighting “an unbeatable quality-price ratio on the occasion Christmas”.
A competing supermarket chain, Co-op, also announced on Thursday that it plans to open 75 new stores in 2025 across the United Kingdom to “accelerate the growth of its local offering”.
