DECRYPTION – Despite an upswing in sales at Christmas, turnover in the publishing sector will be down compared to 2023. And the new year 2025 looks uncertain.

Relief for publishers: despite inflation and ever more expensive , the “Christmas effect” continues in bookstores. This year again, book sales increased as New Year's Eve approached. According to Edistat, they peaked at 11.4 million during the week of December 9 to 15, an increase of 23% compared to the previous week. And they climbed another 26% from December 16 to 22. This final stretch before Christmas gave pride of place to literary publications: in large format or in paperback, this king segment accounted for 60% of sales, far ahead of comics, in second position, with 23% of works sold.

This last minute improvement, however, hides a mixed year. Rich in political and sporting events, 2024 does not seem to have been particularly conducive to reading… At least that is what the results of the Bookstore Union suggest…
