It’s almost Christmas, and it’s always time to look for presents. What if you put a book under the tree? Booksellers from the La Grande Ourse bookstore in Dieppe (Seine-Maritime) gave us their favorites.
A “breathtaking” novel
The story of Own takes place in Chile, the author’s country Alia Trabucco Zeran. “A woman, Estela, is hired as a maid for a family in Santiago, the country’s capital. She comes from a very poor family,” recalls Mila Boursier, bookseller.
From the start of this “breathtaking” novel, which received the Femina Foreign Prize, we know that something happened in the main character’s family. “A little girl died there, but we don’t know how,” announces the bookseller.
Estela, the narrator, tells us her story. “But it’s strange, because she’s behind a wall, she’s sequestered. It makes you want to know more. She calls out to youyou reader, and you have no choice but to listen to it. It gives a voice to those who don’t have one. » This “quite strange” character makes the reader oscillate between “dream and reality”.
“It’s a wonderful novel to suspense. We only want to get to the end of the book,” breathes Mila Boursier, who devoured this work in “a few hours.”
The novel can be found at the editions Robert Laffont at the price of €20.90.
Shipwreck stories
Perhaps you have listened to the podcast “Shipwrecked, True Stories” by Daniel Fiévet on France Inter radio. The journalist tells different stories of shipwrecks.
Now the podcast was adapted into book form, keeping the same title. There we find eight destinies of boats and their crews. “Like Narcisse Pelletier, this 14-year-old boy, in 1858, who was abandoned then adopted by aborigines, quotes Mila Boursier. When he was recovered, he no longer knew how to speak French. »
We also read the story of the shipwreck of Tromelin Island, when slaves remained on a microscopic island for fifteen years, or the story of the massacre of Bataviaa Dutch ship which was shipwreck, and whose crew divided into clans which killed each other.
“It’s a great beautiful book to offer, believes the bookseller. You have maps, period photos, newspaper extracts…” The work is published by the Julliard publishing house and costs €34.90.
An adventure for the youngest
The children are not left out either. “I have lots of favorite children’s books, it’s difficult to choose,” smiles Elise Inglard, bookseller.
However, she highlights a first book: The mysterious ruinsof Max Ducospublished by Sarbacane, which is aimed at children aged 4 to 6.
This work, both written and illustrated, follows the story of children who visit their grandparents, who live in a château which falls into ruin. The village mayor wants to turn it into a luxury hotel.
The protagonists will call on two children from a previous Max Ducos album to play investigators. They search the ruins beneath the castle in search of treasure in order to save the place.
“From page to page, we open doors, we discover secret passages,” describes Elise Inglard. It works wonderfully, there is a tension narrative. » The book is priced at €16.90.
A paper heroine that comes to life
The junior novel THE exploits of Connie Marapar Jean-Philippe Arrou-Vignodis aimed at 10-12 year olds.
“We find a single mother with three children who writes books, helped by them. She left the city for a shack deep in the Irish countryside,” describes Elise Inglard.
One day, the mother disappears while she has a meeting with her publisher in London. “Crazy with worry, the children call on the heroine of the stories they write together,” reveals the bookseller. At the heart of the novel, the paper heroine will come to life and help them. Fiction and reality become entangled. »
According to Elise Inglard, this story, “full of intrigue and of ardor » is “very well balanced for young readers”, with many notes of humor. It can be found at Editions Gallimard Jeunesse for €14.50.
