A few years ago, second-hand dealers feared that their passion would die out, this is no longer the case today. Philippe Kergonna, organizer of the living room Antiques flea market design (read opposite), notes that young people now favor second hand, vintage.

Max Foucault25 years old is one of them. He started bargain hunting almost four years ago. In July 2023, he opened his bookstore The intoxication of readingrue de la Halle, which he decorated almost entirely from second hand.

« 90% of my decor is second-hand: my dresser, my china, my tables, my chairs and even a large part of my books. » The bookseller advises: “You have to go to the flea market in the morning, that’s when you get the good deals. »

The transmission of a story

Max Foucault launched into book sales to follow his passion for literature, after political science studies. “Each book is chosen for its content, its author, its subject. I don’t always remember the big names that you find in supermarkets,” explains the young man. His specialty: social sciences including political philosophy.

What he perceives in books, he also sees in furniture: the transmission of a story.

“There is a traditional side. Furniture is also the testimony of a time that is no more. We are heirs, we only have to bend down to pick up what has already been built. »

The second hand occupies a large place in his life. “You should see at home, more than half are second-hand,” he jokes. If he made this choice, it is alsofor economic and ecological questions. “Young people reflect hyperconsumption with excessive prices for obsolete materials. I bought my furniture for two to three times less than in traditional stores. »
