Youth selection: our latest discoveries

On the program for our selection: a musical tale, a comic strip dedicated to Gisèle Halimi, an album to scare you, a game book, a trip to Naples…

Me, Gisèle by Sandrine Bonini with Annick Cojean (Grasset Jeunesse)

Through this comic strip, we discover the revolt of a little girl who became a great fighter against injustice, defender of the rights of women and the weakest.

Through 10 sketches inspired by the life of Gisèle Halimi, the comic also addresses themes such as consent, choice, the human condition with a modern graphic treatment.

The jazz musical tale A Crazy Day by George Gershwin

Inspired by An American in this tale is to be enjoyed as a family with the beautiful illustrations of Alexis Bruchon, the whimsical pen of Fabrice Colin and the voice of Laure Calamy.

The tale is set to music by The Amazing Keystone Bigband, winner of jazz music 2018.

The problem with inspiration is that it is playful. The more we look for it, the better it hides.

The House of the Awful by Maritwell Marti and Xavier Salomo (Seuil Jeunesse)

The Affreux are gathered at the tavern and decide to move, but who will agree to sell a house to the Affreux?

We liked:

  • the dark humor of this book
  • the flaps to lift to discover the places where the Affreux want to live

Examples? The restless vault for the zombie with a mezzanine bedroom with a soft coffin and a view of the neighboring tombs or the cyanide candy chalet for the witch with a kitchen equipped with a giant pot for organizing convivial dinners.

Chivalrous by François Goupil (Sarbacane)

Chivalrous it's a bit Where is Charlie? in the world of knights with 10 trials and 12 double pages full of details with elements to find as well as intruders.

Nina and Bruno by Serena Guiliano and Mathou (Robert Laffont youth)

Here is the second volume in a series to discover a destination (the first volume was devoted to Rome) with Nina, a little girl, and Bruno, a grumpy and gluttonous cat.

We therefore follow this duo at Nina's aunt's house in Naples a little before Christmas and while Bruno must find his place in front of the family cat, they wander around Naples to discover the must-sees, the gastronomy and local specificities like the doll hospital.

On each double page, expressions, essential sentences or vocabulary are offered in Italian to be able to communicate.

My little Santa Claus by Gabrielle Vincent (Grasset Jeunesse)

It's the afternoon of December 24 and in a snowfield, Santa Claus lands next to a little girl. Problem: he has absolutely no toys, no gifts with him.
Chagrined, the little girl rushes home and gives him her doll before he leaves again in the sky.

An album full of tenderness!

Bric a brac by Maria Jalibert (Acces Jeunesse)

Each page of this album brings together objects (some linked to childhood) to address notions, colors such as horizontal/vertical, outside/in, disorder/tidy in a very visual way.

You can also have fun detailing each page and describing the objects presented.

Amy Adele's surprise birthday (Larousse Jeunesse)

In this album for toddlers, we discover a whole series of songs around the birthday while following the preparation for it and attending the party.

If everyone knows the famous “happy birthday”, the other songs are less known and can be listened to by pressing a button with this audio book.

The fairy with two faces by C. Gastaut after Charles Perrault (Father Castor)

The story is about a widow who has two daughters. The eldest is ugly, selfish and as hurtful as a thistle. The youngest is pretty like her father, honest and gentle like a lamb.

The mother, jealous of the beauty of her second daughter, mistreats her until the day precious stones, flowers and other treasures come out of her mouth as soon as she says a word.

We love illustrations that give pride of place to lush gardens!
