This is probably the sharpest pen in the department. René Frégni, a writer from Marseille but living in Manosque, remains one of the most renowned contemporary authors in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Today, he offers his brand new work Desert.
A book that stands out, since the interview format is used. During these interviews, the winner of the Eugène-Dabit prize reveals his secret garden, from his childhood to today. The author spoke exclusively to La Provence.
René Frégni, why this desire to retrace your life through interviews?
The university journalist Fabrice Lardreau contacted me one day. He explained to me that he had created a collection that includes 10 writers he likes. The idea was to answer questions about our lives. I accepted. We are really in an autobiographical story where I tell in particular how I deserted school or the army.
Hence the title of the book “Deserting”…
Indeed, I have abandoned almost everything in my life. I was born a deserter. And this book is all the desertions of this life. However, initially, I proposed the title Fugitive. But this was not accepted in the end.
How did the collaboration with Fabrice Lardreau come about?
He rented a house in Forcalquier, not very far from my house. He came for a week, and every day he came to see me. We were walking along the water’s edge. We walked, we talked. And he recorded all of this.
