Relatively faithful to the novels, the Outlander series should nevertheless experience some differences from the source material with the release of the final season.

A different ending

The Outlander series has been in full swing for several years now. Adapted from the novel series The Thistle and the Tartan by Diana Gabaldon, Outlander mixes romance, drama and fantasy to offer viewers a journey to the heart of 18th-century Scotland. Particularly popular on Netflix, the series is nevertheless due to end soon at the end of the eighth season. And if until now the different seasons faithfully adapted the novels, this finale should have some differences with the last book, as explained by the author under one of his facebook posts.

(…) All I can say is that (the final season) will not be exactly like the end of the novels. (…) Even if the people on the show had a full copy of the (final) book, there is no way the show would be like it. The main constraint being that season eight is only 10 episodes – and generally (…) they can’t adapt more than 10% of each book in a season. For season 8, they have all of Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone (book 9), a working synopsis of book 10, and about three-quarters of book 8 that they didn’t use. That’s a lot to cram into one-hour episodes and still make sense. So they did what they did with the first books; they picked out specific scenes and stories and put them into a framework and tied them together in a way that made sense.

A final season that is long awaited

According to the author, these changes are therefore linked to several factors. First, Diana Gabaldon explains that the last book is not yet finished and therefore cannot yet reveal its plot to the showrunners of the series. In addition, it is also because the series has not been renewed for the same number of episodes. Season eight will be shorter and composed of around ten episodes, compared to between 13 and 16 until now. While the series has already sacrificed several elements of the books before, the authors of the series must now decide and select the plots that are the most logical for this last season. That being said, we will still have to wait a while before being able to discover this last season. Before that, the second half of season 7 will be broadcast during the month of November. To be continued.
