Explosion in a building kills one person in Liège: “I thought all the windows were going to blow out”

This Sunday evening, residents of Rue de Sélys in Liège were startled when an explosion was heard in their street.

An explosion followed by a fire occurred on Sunday at around 7:20 p.m. on the 2nd floor of a building located at number 2 rue de Sélys, in Liège. A security perimeter was set up to allow emergency services to intervene. One person died. Six other victims were transferred to hospital for poisoning. Eight people were also received at the advanced medical post.

The search of the building was still ongoing on Sunday around 9:20 p.m. and the rehousing phase was then underway.

On site, residents give their testimony. We heard a big bang, we thought at first it was a car accident and then my daughter called out to me saying ‘mom it’s the building opposite the house that exploded, we have to call the ambulance or the fire brigade because there were big flames’“, explains a resident of the neighborhood. “We were all a little scared, we wondered what was happening, if there were any victims or not.”

Fear, a word that comes up often in the testimony of people who live around the place where the explosion took place.A big bang, explosion and as I was afraid that the windows would break, I immediately asked my son to go to the back of the house and a few minutes later we went out and we saw the fire escaping from the building”says another resident. We’re not very anxious about the night because we spoke with the firefighters and it seems to be really over, but it was still very very impressive, it’s the noise especially that is impressive, I thought all the windows in the house were going to blow out, but fortunately not“, continues another local resident.

“We had customers who were sitting down, they were eating and we heard the explosion, it exploded, I was behind the kitchen, I saw that it exploded, there were pigeons that flew like that suddenly so I felt that there was a gas explosion“, concludes a trader, also shaken by the noise.
