Jannik Sinner and Jasmine Paolini. Inevitably, they are the highest-seeded Italians, the only Italians left at the US Open, the fourth and final Slam of the season underway on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows in New York, which will see the start of the round of 16 program on Monday 2 September.

Sinner in the night against Paul

Sinner, who arrived at the last Slam of the season with a torrent of controversy linked to his positive Clostebol test (from which he was cleared) and with low expectations due to his less than optimal physical condition, finds himself the big favorite after the surprising eliminations of Djokovic and Alcaraz. The South Tyrolean, after a set conceded in the first round to McDonald, then showed great solidity against Michelsen and O’Connell, both beaten in three sets. Now on the road to the world number one (who will remain so regardless of the result in the tournament) is the American Tommy Paul, world number 14, executioner in the first round of Sonego, before overcoming Purcell and Diallo. The precedents say 2-1 Sinner, the last one a year ago on the Canadian hard court of Toronto. The match will be played at the Arthur Ashe stadium in the Italian night, at the end of the match between Swiatek and Samsonova, which will start at 1.

Paolini defies Muchova

The only Italian left in the draw is Jasmine Paolini, who is chasing her third consecutive final in a Slam, after those lost at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. The world no. 5, who eliminated Andreescu, Pliskova and Putintseva, will face Karolina Muchova, who after losing the semifinal last year at Flushing Meadows against the future champion Coco Gauff, has been out for almost a whole year due to an injury to her right wrist. The 28-year-old Czech, the same age as Jasmine, has therefore dropped to no. 52 in the WTA ranking, but she is absolutely not to be underestimated, also because, in addition to having beaten top-level opponents such as Volynets, Osaka and Potapova, she has won all three previous matches against the Italian, one of which was in the US Open qualifiers in 2018. The match is scheduled at the Louis Armstrong Stadium at 5:00 p.m. Italian time.
