A Belgian won the EuroMillions jackpot of over 149 million euros on Friday evening, one of the highest amounts ever won by a compatriot.

The Belgian was the only one to cross the winning combination on Friday: the numbers 12-14-34-41-47 and the two stars 3 and 4. It earns him or her exactly 149,017,789 euros. There were also two Belgian winners in the second category, good for more than 257,000 euros.

The biggest win in our country dates back to 11 October 2016, when a street sweeper from Schaarbeek made off with more than 168 million euros. Less than a year later, on 2 June 2017, a fellow countryman cracked the jackpot, which at the time contained more than 153 million euros.

Fresher in our memory is the story of the millionaire village of Olmen, where in December 2022 no fewer than 165 people won the jackpot of 142 million euros. That earned them more than 866,000 euros per participant.

After a mega win, EuroMillions always takes a turn for the worse: next Tuesday the jackpot will be ‘only’ 17 million euros. (Continue reading below the image)

The Belgian winner is congratulated on the National Lottery website.

Anyone who wins a huge amount of money at EuroMillions must first go to the newsagent with their ticket. There the ticket is validated, but only asterisks appear on the screen. For amounts of more than 25,000 euros the winnings are not shown.

The winner then calls the phone number that appears on the screen. That is the number of the Winners Support Unit, which invites you to Brussels. There, the winning ticket is validated again – in a sober office, no bells and whistles – and it is checked whether it is indeed a win in rank 1. Then it is party time. You get the gigantic amount in your account, a handshake and a bottle of champagne and can start your journey home. Whether that is by limousine or by bike, you can choose yourself.
