White smoke escaped Thursday at 6:08 p.m. from the Sistine Chapel to the Vatican. She announced the election of a new pope to succeed François by the 133 cardinals voters gathered in conclave since Wednesday afternoon.

(Keystone-ATS) The white smoke was greeted by the strong cheers and the applause of the thousands of faithful massaged on Place Saint-Pierre while the bells of the Saint-Pierre basilica sounded on all flying.
