Activists of the Alliance for the Republic (APR) and the Senegalese Democratic Party (PDS) established in the diaspora demonstrated on Saturday in Geneva, Switzerland, against the “drifts” which they accuse the new regime in Senegal.
According to Journal l’As, the protesters gave a memorandum to the High Commissioner Office of the United Nations Human rights. In this document, they call on the UN to “set up a special human rights mission in Senegal” and to “maintain a firm diplomatic channel in order to encourage Senegal to respect its international commitments, to restore civic space and fundamental freedoms”.
Still according to the newspaper, the editors of the text insist: “It is imperative that the community does not remain silent in the face of these drifts. To defend the rule of law in Senegal is to defend the stability of the entire West African sub-region ”.
The demonstrators also accuse the Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko of being at the origin of a climate of increasing tension in the country. “Slander accusations, death threats, calls for violence against certain media professionals have become commonplace,” they denounce.
They also point out “massive political dismissals, restrictions on the right to demonstrate, attacks on freedom to come and go, the instrumentalization of justice, pressures on the independent press”.
