Leila Benali, minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, reaffirmed Tuesday in Marseille that Morocco is progressing with determination to establish itself as a major regional center in the production of renewable energies and the development of the value chain of strategic ores.
Speaking during the 4th edition of the Europe-Africa forum, organized under the theme “Innovate together”the Minister stressed that this strategy is fully part of the vision of the king which makes the energy transition a strategic lever of the new development model. Morocco thus aims to appear among the pioneering countries of the energy transition in the 21st century.
In a speech pronounced during a high level session, Benali recalled that “The kingdom has invested massively in energy infrastructure over the past twenty years, thus strengthening its ability to produce renewable electricity competitive”She said the cost of production in Morocco is less than a third of that of nuclear in certain European nations.
According to the minister, this dynamic stems directly from the royal orientations aimed at making the energy transition a pillar of energy sovereignty and security, in a global context in full change. It is based on three major axes: the development of green energies, the location of technologies and the creation of local industrial sectors generating jobs.
-Leila Benali has also highlighted the high potential of Morocco in the production of green hydrogen, in particular in the form of the thermal methanol and ammonia, which could make it possible to supply the global fuel maritime fleets specific to a lower cost than that of liquefied natural gas. These assets place the kingdom as a strategic actor in future energy balances.
In addition, the minister insisted on the importance of integrating the mining value chain into the energy transition. She indicated that her ministry is working with African and international partners to redefine sustainability standards and ESG certifications for strategic minerals, as part of super-region ranging from Kazakhstan to South Africa, passing through Morocco.
This positioning is part of the royal strategy for strengthening African integration and highlighting the central role of Morocco in sustainable global supply chains, in particular in key sectors carrying regional economic transformation. The Minister announced in this respect that a new unified reference framework should be presented at the next national conference on mines.
Guest of honor of this edition of the Europe-Africa forum, Morocco has benefited from a special session highlighting its economic dynamics, its structuring projects and its role as a strategic bridge between Europe and Africa, especially in the fields of energy and mining resources.
