A system to combat school harassment has been set up in Valais. In particular, it provides for the attention of the municipalities, a support permanence to which the victims can contact, indicates Thursday Valais Health promotion.
According to the Valais Health Observatory, over the year 2022, 23% of students from 11 to 15 in the canton said they had been harassed in school, and 14% were victims of cyberbullying.
The “innovative project” announced Thursday is based on personalized support and multidisciplinary mobilization in the face of this “worrying phenomenon”. Successfully tested in the regions of Sierre and Anniviers, it is now extended to the whole canton.
The system is based on four pillars: an evaluation grid, a support permanence, a targeted communication and the involvement of a social worker to ensure the follow -up of situations. All within the framework of a partnership between Valais Health Promotion, the Sierroise leisure, education and culture association (ASLEC), the Center for Education and Human Relations (CCER) and the Cantonal Youth Service (SCJ).
The first results are talking: 38 reports were recorded, 27 young people and their families benefited from support and interventions were carried out in class with 80 students.
Harassment between peers affects the well-being of young people also outside the school walls, underlines Valais health promotion. Stress, anxiety, isolation, decrease in self -esteem, absenteeism, dropping out of school, depressive symptoms, the consequences are multiple, exacerbated by social networks.
Thirty professionals (schools, school transport, sports environments, extracurricular reception structures) have committed to create and test this device.
