Najat Benali, president of the coordination of Muslim associations in Paris, denounces a undervaluation of anti-Muslim acts in France. According to her, the reality is much worse than the official figures, because the latter only take into account the complaints filed. A survey carried out in 2022 with faithful revealed that more than 50% of them had been victims of anti-Muslim acts or words, but in 95% of the cases, these victims did not file a complaint. The reasons mentioned include a feeling of uselessness of the approach and a general climate of stigmatization, where political and media discourses strengthen this hatred without being sanctioned. She emphasizes that these acts of hatred result in an almost systematic stigma of Muslims, with often uninhibited remarks. She also evokes the words of Bruno Retailleau, who admitted “to have been clumsy” in his statements, but she recalls that this is not isolated cases, stressing that for years, negative speeches on Islam have been conveyed in the media. According to her, there is a major propaganda problem in certain media, including chains that continuously disseminate hateful messages. It calls for firmer action, demanding a systematic prosecution of speeches encouraging hatred towards Muslims.
