VIDEO – The ancient site of Petra was affected by a this , May 4. The Jordanian authorities had to evacuate the many tourists present.

Torrents of water swept heights on the iconic pink rock of Petra. The historic site located in southern was flooded after floods hit the region this Sunday.

The Jordanian meteorological authority broadcast a video showing floods surge in this very touristy area while visitors gathered at the entrance to the Khazneh, one of the known tombs of Petra, while waiting for their evacuation.

More and more intense rains in the region

“The rescue teams of the Regional Authority of Petra and the Civil Defense have evacuated hundreds of tourists in Petra, without any victim being reported, after floods affected the archaeological site this afternoon”, said an official at the Al-Mamlaka channel.

“The total number of tourists who visited the site today amounts to 1,785, and the majority of them have been evacuated by the Civil Defense teams”he said. The sale of tickets was suspended in the afternoon by safety.

Similar evacuations have already taken place in the past, the region being more and more prone to intense rains and . Classified as a UNESCO Heritage Site, Petra is famous for its monumental temples in La Roche Rose. It was designated in 2007 as one of the seven wonders of the world after an online vote.
