The murder of a Kenyan deputy killed on Wednesday by bullets in the street of the capital Nairobi seems “premeditated,” said police in this Eastern African country on Thursday, President William Ruto asking that officials “render accounts”.
The murder of Charles NGO’ondo Were, member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of Raila Odonga, a historic Kenyan opponent who has trained an alliance with President William Ruto in recent months, took place on Wednesday around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
“The nature of this crime seems to be both targeted and premeditated,” said national police spokesman Muchiri Nyaga, in a statement published on X.
According to elements collected by the police using eyewitnesses, a motorcycle, transporting a driver and a passenger, stopped next to the car with the deputy on board, on the main road of Ngong, which crosses the capital.
The motorcycle passenger then approached the vehicle and shot it, before jumping on the motorcycle and fleeing.
The deputy was taken to the hospital, where his death was found. According to the police, neither the driver of the vehicle, nor another passenger on board, were injured.
The police “are on the scene, reconstructing the circumstances surrounding the death” of the deputy, specifies the press release. “At this point, it is too early to provide other details,” said Nyaga. Charles NGO’ondo Were was the deputy for the district of Kasipul, a rural region of western Kenya.
“May God give to the family and the inhabitants of Kasipul the strength to endure the loss of the Honorable Charles NGO’ondo Were,” reacted President William Ruto, urging the police to “conduct an in -depth investigation into this incident”. “Officials must be accountable,” he added.
“We lost a good son of the country,” said Raila Odonga earlier on Thursday, deploring that the deputy was “merciless and bloody.”
